SASSA Grant Guidelines and Regulations

These guidelines outline the rules, regulations, and best practices for applying for and receiving SASSA grants. Understanding these guidelines ensures compliance and helps maintain your eligibility for social assistance.

General Application Guidelines

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for SASSA grants, you must:

What is NOT Permitted

  • Paying anyone to help you apply (all SASSA services are free)

  • Submitting the same application to multiple SASSA offices

Your Rights as a Beneficiary

You Have the Right To:

  • Assistance: Receive help with applications and forms at no cost
  • Language: Be served in your language of choice

Your Responsibilities as a Beneficiary

You Must:

  • Report Changes: Notify SASSA immediately of any change in circumstances including:
    • Change of address or contact details
    • Change in income or employment status
    • Change in household composition
    • Receipt of other income or grants
    • Admission to an institution or care facility
    • Leaving the country for extended periods
  • Collect Payments: Collect your grant within the specified timeframe
  • Update Information: Keep your banking and contact details current
  • Respond Promptly: Reply to SASSA communications within specified deadlines
  • Attend Appointments: Attend medical assessments and review appointments
  • Report Death: Family must report beneficiary deaths immediately
  • Return Overpayments: Repay any amounts received incorrectly

Grant-Specific Guidelines

SRD Grant (R370) Guidelines

  • Beneficiaries must be unemployed and not receiving UIF or any other social grant
  • Income (including spousal income) must be below the threshold
  • Must not be a full-time student receiving NSFAS funding
  • Monthly recertification through database checks is automatic
  • If you find employment, you must notify SASSA immediately
  • Failed bank account verifications may result in payment via alternative methods
  • Appeals must be submitted within 90 days of decline notification

Old Age Grant Guidelines

  • Apply three months before your 60th birthday
  • Income thresholds: Single R5,800/month, Married R11,600/month (combined)
  • You may continue working while receiving the grant if within income limits
  • Grant amount increases at age 75
  • Periodic life certificate verification is required
  • Report if you're admitted to a state-funded institution
  • Grant continues for life if you remain eligible

Child Support Grant Guidelines

  • Primary caregiver must apply (not necessarily the biological parent)
  • Income thresholds: Single caregiver R5,500/month, Married R11,000/month (combined)
  • Child must attend school if older than 7 years
  • Immunization records required for children under 6
  • Caregiver must live with the child and be primarily responsible for care
  • Grant continues until child turns 18
  • Can receive grants for multiple children
  • Report if child is no longer in your care
  • Report if child is admitted to state care facility

Disability Grant Guidelines

  • Medical assessment by SASSA-appointed doctor is mandatory
  • Temporary grants (6-12 months) require renewal with updated medical assessments
  • Permanent grants are reviewed periodically by SASSA
  • Income thresholds: Single R5,800/month, Married R11,600/month (combined)
  • Disability must prevent you from working for more than 6 months
  • Report if your medical condition improves significantly
  • Attend all scheduled medical reassessments
  • Converts to Old Age Grant at age 60 if still eligible

Foster Child Grant Guidelines

  • Valid court order granting foster care is essential
  • Must reapply every 2 years with renewed court order
  • No means test (income threshold) applies
  • Foster parent must attend parenting skills programs if required by court
  • Child must attend school if of school-going age
  • Report if foster care order is revoked or child returns to biological parents
  • Report if foster care placement changes
  • Grant continues until child turns 18 or court order expires

Payment Collection Guidelines

Collecting Your Grant

  • Timing: Payments are made monthly according to the published schedule
  • Methods: Bank account, SASSA card, Post Office, or selected retailers
  • ID Required: Always bring your ID when collecting payments
  • Personal Collection: Only the beneficiary should collect the grant (unless a proxy is registered)
  • Uncollected Payments: Held for 90 days before being returned to SASSA
  • Banking Changes: Allow 30-60 days for banking detail updates to process
  • Security: Never share your PIN or allow others to access your card

Authorized Representatives and Proxies

  • Beneficiaries unable to collect grants personally may appoint a proxy
  • Proxy must be registered at a SASSA office with both parties present
  • Medical certificate may be required to prove inability to collect personally
  • Proxy must bring own ID and beneficiary's ID when collecting
  • Institutional care facilities may collect on behalf of residents (with authorization)
  • Proxy arrangements can be cancelled at any time by the beneficiary
  • Proxies must use grants for the beneficiary's benefit

Consequences of Non-Compliance
