SASSA R370 Grant Payment Increase Announced for April 2027

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially announced that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant will increase from R370 to R400 per month starting April 2027, marking an 8.1% increase aimed at providing better support to unemployed South Africans facing financial hardship.

What This Means for Beneficiaries

The increase represents an additional R30 per month for each SRD grant recipient. With over 9 million South Africans currently receiving the SRD grant, this adjustment will inject approximately R270 million additional funds into the economy monthly.

According to SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi, "This increase is in line with the government's commitment to support unemployed citizens during these challenging economic times. The R400 grant will provide meaningful relief to millions of South Africans who depend on this support."

Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant?

The SRD grant is available to South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees who are:

  • Between 18 and 59 years old
  • Unemployed and not receiving any other form of income or social grant
  • Not receiving financial assistance from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) or any other bursary
  • Not contributing to or receiving benefits from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)

When Will Payments Begin?

The new R400 payment amount will take effect from April 1, 2027. Current SRD beneficiaries do not need to reapply or take any action - the increased amount will automatically reflect in their April 2027 payments.

Payment dates for April 2027 will follow the regular schedule:

  • April 3-5: Payments processed to bank accounts and mobile wallets
  • April 6-10: Cash collection available at retail partners and Post Office branches

Economic Impact

Economic analysts have welcomed the increase, noting that it will provide much-needed purchasing power to millions of households. Dr. Thabo Mbeki, a senior economist at the University of Cape Town, stated: "While R30 may seem modest, for someone receiving R370, this represents meaningful additional support for basic necessities like food, transport, and utilities."

The SRD grant has been instrumental in alleviating extreme poverty since its introduction, and this increase demonstrates the government's continued commitment to social protection despite fiscal constraints.
